helping president obama. why am i not surprised? tonight we'll talk to erica laugherty whose mother is the courageous sandy hook principal who died protecting those kids. she confronted a u.s. senator who voted against that bill. that was a tough moment for her. >>> what do we do about gitmo? this is a tough one. especially around progressives. no country wants to take the prisoners that we have. we can't just let them go, can we? how long can the united states actually hold prisoners without taking them to trial? >>> also, jon stewart said it best. he always does. congress only cares about meals on wheels when those meals are coming down the aisle on a nice airplane. tonight the head of the meals on wheels program himself is coming here to talk about the suffering because of these cuts, because of the sequestration. >>> by now, everyone should know, you don't tug on superman's cape. you don't spit into the wind. and you don't mess around with governor chris christie of new jersey. as some new jersey folks found out. this is "hardball," the place for politics. he's not gonna selu so

think the reason there are so many folks talking about the possibility of government tyranny is threefold really. the obama administration's increasing reliance on big government. i think it's folks like alex jones who did this routine where every time they shut down a city like boston it's the end of the world and military law. and honestly, i think folks like you, piers because, you know, you go out of your way to really give the impression that you're interested in taking away people's fundamental right to bear arms and i think that scares a lot of folks. >> i'm not against the right to bear arms, i'm seriously against the right of having military style assault weapons to blow people away in a school. >> you said you're against assault weapons, but handguns kill 6,000 a year. >> they're both a big problem. mass shootings. >> you're from the uk, why don't we go with a full gun ban. >> we discussed it, the uk has 40, 50 gun murders a year, the u.s. has 12,000. let's move on. >> i'm glad you finally have your agenda out there. >> let's turn to jason collins. this is the sport

reaction to what's happened here? >> reporter: well, nobody's talking about it publicly, you know, but president obama is literally getting asked about syria every day, and again today, with this racheting up of tensions, the president once again said you know, no prospect that he can see of putting u.s. ground troops into syria. but he's not ruling out any options. have a listen to what he had to say. >> if in fact we see strong evidence that we can present and that allows us to say that the syrian military and the syrian government is using chemical weapons, then that is a game changer for us. >> reporter: a game changer. no ground troops, but still keeping all the other options on the table, but it looks like the israelis have decided pretty much they're not waiting around. the israelis as you know have a very strong policy. what they are looking at striking is any weapons that they believe the syrians are going to try and get out of the country to keep safe, transfer to hezbollah across the border in lebanon, and in fact, we got a statement from the israelis not exactly confir

beat president obama on the issue of government spending. just don't talk about medicare, and don't talk about social security. but you can talk about government spending. many republicans would then add to that don't talk about national defense, the pentagon budget should also be off limits. the problem with that thinng is you have now exempted the three largest parts of the federal budget from your critique of federal spending. so so these are sort of the divisions and the conflicts and the contradictions that i think any serious proponent of limited government has to contend with. i think there's been a sort of this view that's been propounded that limited government is impossible. anarchists even make this argument, and i would argue -- i would counter to you that limited government is possible but difficult. the fact that there has been limited government in the united states government was a fairly limited government for 150 years even after the progressive era, even after the civil war where there was some government growth, and there were some impediments to government gro
